Heavenly Envy

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

I went to a funeral for friend this afternoon. He died at age 55. A month or so ago I attended the funeral for a guy I hung out with in high school; he died at 50. I still feel like I’m too young to be burying people that are close to my own age, but I guess it’s a natural part of life. Our bodies aren’t meant to last forever, at least not our earthly bodies. Our heavenly bodies… Now that’s another story altogether.

I don’t know when it started, and I don’t know if I’m the only one with this problem, but at funerals I often catch myself being slightly envious of the one who has passed away… That should probably be qualified a bit more; envious of fellow Christians who have passed away. Envious because I know (if only just a little) the glory they enjoy after leaving this life behind. Meanwhile I’m still stuck in this aging old tent. Our bodies, like tents, aren’t made to last for ever nor for long-term habitation. Try as I might, mine will only last another 40 years or so longer, tops (probably less.) But I have consolation that as this body moves toward its end, a new life is developing that will one day be fully realized in the presence of my Lord:

So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Although I am admittedly anxious to get to that celebration, I have no intention of hastening my date with eternity. I am content with God’s plan for my life, whether His exit plan for me involves a fatal run-in with a cement truck tomorrow, or a long convalescence through my 70’s or 80’s or 90’s… I’ll live the rest of my days in gratitude for the blessings He’s sent my way, especially for the loving wife and great kids that I so don’t deserve.

But still there’s that, something… that envy that makes me long for the things to come. It’s a hope for things to come; not a hope, as in “I hope it will happen”, but a hope as in something that is sure, yet is just out of reach and will arrive at a time I don’t know. As C.S. Lewis so aptly put it,

We cannot tell each other about it. It is the secret signature of each soul, the incommunicable and unappeasable want, the thing we wanted before we met our wives or made our friends or chose our work, and which we shall still desire on our deathbeds, when the mind no longer knows wife or friend or work. While we are, this is. If we lose this, we lose all.

That’s right; while I am, this — that built-in longing for what has been promised and will be — just is. I can’t wait for Heaven, but I will.

I Am Now A Megadeth Fan

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

I can’t say that I could name a single Megadeth song, nor would I recognize one if I heard it played, but I am solidly a fan of the band’s frontman, Dave Mustaine

“I’m just hoping that whatever is in the White House next year is a Republican. I can’t bear to watch what’s happened to our great country. Everybody’s got their head in the sand. Everybody in the industry is like, ‘Oh, Obama’s doing such a great job…’ I don’t think so. Not from what I see.”

He goes on to say some right-on-the-money things about the other candidates in the Republican primary. I can’t tell you how good it is to hear some thoughtful commentary on politics from someone in the entertainment industry. Far, far better than the likes of Samuel L. Jackson who threw his support behind Barack Obama because he is black (cue rolling of eyeballs.)

Temporal Distortion

No, not the kind they talk about on Star Trek. Very cool nonetheless. Play the video below full-screen to get the full effect.

Now wasn’t that awesome?

Happy Birthday, Dutch!

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Today marks the 101st anniversary of the day of Ronald Reagan’s birth. Happy Birthday, Dutch!

I get a kick out of his nickname, “Dutch”. My dad and all his brothers were given nicknames by a hired hand when they were kids; the eldest brother was “Abie”, next was “Dutch”, dad was “Swede”, and his little brother was “Runt”. They kept those names for the rest of their lives, and most of their closest friends didn’t even know their real names. Dad said the only person who called him by his real name was his own mother.

Reagan’s nickname came a little earlier than did my dad’s and his brothers’;

Ronald got the name Dutch because when he was born, his father said, he looks just like a Dutchman. He was a big baby, chubby.

I’ve known quite a few Dutchmen; don’t really get how being a chubby baby made him look like a Dutchman, but whatever. Just wanting to wish one of my favorite Presidents a happy birthday. You, sir, are missed.

edit: Interesting side note;

That was the Reagan Quote Of The Day on the Ronald Reagan website when this post first went up a year ago. Ironic, especially considering the parallels between the Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter Administrations. The Obama people keep saying we’re coming out of this recession/depression; while this part of the country hasn’t been as badly affected as others, I’m not getting the same warm fuzzies they’re trying to pass along in regard to the economy. Replacing Obama would go a long way toward instilling confidence in a lot of people though.

Political Blackmail

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

I was listening to the radio while running errands today, and the news was just breaking that Donald Trump was endorsing Mitt Romney for the RNC Presidential nomination. The news reporter added that if Romney were to get the nomination the The Donald said he wouldn’t run as a third-party candidate…

Lovely; now we have a big-haired celebrity type telling us that if Romney isn’t elected he just might jump in as a third-party spoiler. Trump would have a snowball’s chance in hell of actually winning, but him being in the race would certainly give us a repeat of what Ross Perot did in 1992 and 1996 — the Republican vote would be effectively split, and that would guaran-damn-tee another four years of Barack Obama.

A yet again there is very little to like in the people running for the Republican nod this cycle; of the four left in the race, Romney is the one I like the least. That said, any one of them is certain to do better than the current Oval Office occupant. I fear though that a Romney Administration will be about as successful in advancing conservative policy as that of George W. Bush… Not very.

Whoever gets the nod, here is one post-campaign* promise I’d like to hold President Obama to:

* almost forgot; with him the campaigning never ended.
