Elvis plays a the son of a wealthy oil tycoon, and drives a sharp looking red roadster that turns out to be the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conceptcarz.com\/vehicle\/z6401\/default.aspx\">1959 Corvette XP-87 Stingray<\/a>. What a gorgeous machine! Given that the car was built in &#8217;59, and the movie was released in &#8217;67 shows how well the design of the car aged.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xp-87_stingray_clambake_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xp-87_stingray_clambake_2-400x241.jpg\" alt=\"xp-87_stingray_clambake_2\" title=\"xp-87_stingray_clambake_2\" width=\"400\" height=\"241\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1695\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xp-87_stingray_clambake.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xp-87_stingray_clambake-400x235.jpg\" alt=\"xp-87_stingray_clambake\" title=\"xp-87_stingray_clambake\" width=\"400\" height=\"235\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1696\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The XP-87 was designed in &#8217;57 by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Mitchell\">Bill Mitchell<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gary_Shinoda\">Gary Shinoda<\/a> as an exercise in racing design, and was raced extensively the for a short time before being retired. It was then spiffed up and put on the show car circuit, and even used as a weekend driver by Bill Mitchell (after they added a passenger seat!) That&#8217;s what you call a fringe benefit!<\/p>\n<p>The influence of this car&#8217;s design on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevrolet_Corvette#C2_Generation_.281963.E2.80.931967.29\">C2 Corvette<\/a> is pretty obvious.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xp-87_stingray_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/xp-87_stingray_3-400x283.jpg\" alt=\"xp-87_stingray_3\" title=\"xp-87_stingray_3\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1697\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always liked the looks of that model Corvette better than any of the others&#8230; Not sure what it is, but the coupe is one sharp car. I&#8217;d love to do a resto-mod of one someday.
