A Little Enforcement Please?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I just got back from a walk tonight, and am really disgusted with how poorly people cleared their sidewalks. A walk that normally takes me about a half hour instead took 40 minutes, and I feel like I’ve been walking a tightrope the whole time.

We’ve had some weird weather lately — lots of snow followed by above-freezing temps followed by freezing rain followed by more cold, cold temps followed by snow blown around by high winds — and people have just done a crappy job of keeping up with things. Ice, snow that melted to slush, got walked on then refroze, leaving a slippery lumpy mess that’s almost impossible to walk on. Other places look as if only feeble attempts (if any) have been made at clearing the snow that blew in.

We live in the central part of Sioux Falls, and I’m sure many homes are no longer owner-occupied, which makes things worse as renters just don’t tend to things as well as an owner. But a little ice can make things dangerous; I know all too well how easily bones can be broken with a simple fall

The city has pretty specific ordinances regarding the need for keeping the sidewalks cleared…

Sec. 38-76. Duty to remove.

(a) The owner or person in possession of any property abutting on any sidewalk shall keep such sidewalk free from snow and ice and shall remove any snow or ice from the sidewalk within 48 hours after the termination of any snow fall, snow or ice accumulation.

(b) The owner or person in possession of any property abutting upon any sidewalk which ends at an intersection or crosswalk shall maintain the sidewalk free from snow and ice to the edge of the street. Snow and ice deposited on the sidewalk in the street removal process shall be removed within 48 hours of being deposited.

And if the ordinance isn’t followed, the city retains the right to step in and take care of things for the property owner…

Sec. 38-78.1. City may remove.

If the owner or person in possession of property fails to remove the snow or ice from the sidewalks within the time specified, the city may have the snow or ice removed and charge the cost thereof against the abutting property each time the snow or ice is removed.

The trouble is that there is no provision in the ordinances for enforcement. From what I understand, the city only steps in when a complaint is lodged, either by way of a phone call or a message sent through the city’s online complaint form. The trouble is, the form asks for addresses of the properties in violation; I’d be plugging in every other address along the route of my walk.

Ok; I’m done complaining for now. I feel a little better. Just a little.

Automania 2009 Mega-Gallery!

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

The 2009 Automania show is history, and it was a good one. I got there early yesterday (about 4:30) hoping to see a lot of the cars rolling in, but most of them were already in place when I arrived. A couple of the owners said they were there about 2:00!

There were a lot of cars there, and a lot of people. So many people that it was tough to get a decent photo of some of the cars. That’s the bothersome thing about a big show like this; that many cars draws that many people, but if there weren’t as many people, there wouldn’t be as many cars worth seeing. So I guess I’ll put up with it!

A lot of the cars that were there had been at previous shows, like the ’54 Ford Delivery & matching boat-topped camper, and the over-the-top awesomeness of the ’57 Pontiac Chieftain… I had a chance to talk with the owner of the Ford Delivery rig, and will put up some more details about that and other notable cars later. But for now, I’ll quit typing and just hit ‘publish’ to get these photos out there. I hope the page works ok; the admin side is a little balky, which probably means WordPress doens’t much like having to deal with 284 images. Oh well; here’s hoping!

Enjoy!

Click through to see all the photos, but beware; there are a lot of them! (more…)

It’s Called A Turning Lane For A Reason!

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

My biggest pet peeve when driving around Sioux Falls — and anywhere else for that matter — is when people looking for a quick way to turn left out of a parking lot or side street onto a busy street jump first into the turning lane and use it to merge into the flow of traffic. Gah! I hate it!

It’s called a TURNING LANE you ignorant lump of human debris, not a merging lane, so use it for TURNING, not merging!

Thanks. I needed to get that off my chest.

But then, while looking for info on this topic, I find that in some states it is legal to merge into traffic using the center lane. Go figure. At this point, I’m not even sure if South Dakota is one of those state; the codified laws are less than clear on that point (or most any other point for that matter.) So I guess I’ll do a little digging and report back. Even if it is legal here, it still bugs the heck outta me when people do it; you just can’t tell if they’re going to go barreling into the flow of traffic or if they’re going to wait, so every time someone does it I have to brace for impact.

The Return Of The Weatherball?

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

The Argus Leader ran a story today about a Sioux Falls guy — Greg Allis — who is leading the charge to resurrect one of the weatherballs that used to operate in town.

When the weatherball is red,
Warmer weather is ahead.

When the weatherball is white,
colder weather is in sight.

When the weatherball is green,
No change is forseen.

When it blinks in agitation,
There’s going to be precipitation.

There are only two weatherballs left in Sioux Falls; a 5-foot ball at 33rd and Minnesota and a 10-foot ball at 9t Street and Main Avenue. Neither one works. Apparently there is no desire on the part of the banks to get them working again, so Allis wants the city to pick up the project and place one of the balls in a city park, in the name of historic preservation. But the city is balking because they aren’t really old enough to qualify for the “historic” designation.

I love the idea of putting a weatherball back in action, but I don’t necessarily like the idea of it becoming a city government thing. I’m surprised though that one of the local news & weather stations hasn’t grabbed the idea and used it for promotion. KELO-TV was one of the original sponsors; wouldn’t it be great for them to put a weatherball on top of their tower in the downtown area? Just think of the mileage they’d get out of that thing. Or if KSFY picked up on the idea and placed one on a prominent billboard with reference to their weather forecasting…

That would be pure genius. At least I think so. (more…)

South Side Performance At Automania

Friday, June 27th, 2008

It’s been a busy week for me since the Automania show last Wednesday, but there were a few things of interest there that I wanted to share (Ian & I went to the show, and between the two of us, snapped over 300 photos; some are worth seeing, some not so much, but if you’re interested in the whole schmere, you can have a peek here.)

There’s always stuff being shown by different retailers and garages and whatnot, but the display put on by South Side Performance was pretty incredible; I was a bit flabbergasted by what these guys pulled off. Not only did they have a bevy of hot cars to show off, but they also brought out their CNC Water Jet, set it up on the street, and set about cutting aluminum key fobs to give away.

The fact that this machine is able to cut metal (up to 8 inches thick) with water and agate is amazing enough, but for these guys to tear the machine down, pull it out of the shop, haul it — and a rented compressor & generator — downtown, set it up on the street (with a chance of rain in the forecast) and hook it all up is over the top.

As far as I can tell, South Side Performance has no web presence (yet) but there are a number of YouTube videos of various cars on their AWD dyno. Here is a little video tour of the shop, which is nice as I’ve driven by the place dozens of times but have never been inside:

I might have to get to know these guys a little better.
