Spammers: Get a Clue and Take a Friggin Hike!

July 12th, 2006

This little blog sits out here on the World Wide Web and gets maybe a couple-dozen visitors in a good week. (check the Site Meter stats.) But even though hardly anybody visits here, some spammer has decided that my site is a good mark for advertising all kinds of things that don’t even deserve to be mentioned. What do they have to gain by defacing — or rather, trying to deface — my little corner of the web? It’s like somebody trying to sneak into my back yard and write nasty things on a tiny piece of siding on my house with a Crayola marker; they don’t succeed, and even if they did it’s unlikely that anyone would ever see it, and I can get rid of it pretty easily. It just doesn’t make sense to me at all because they have little or nothing to gain other than bothering me.

Most of the referrals that my site gets is from Google searches from people looking for freebie instructions for building a Hillbilly Horseshoes goal; that’s the only thing I can think of that might be a draw for these dirtball spammers. Do they just set up stupid spambots that troll the web looking for targets, which makes it somewhat of a no-effort deal or what?

Whatever the reason, I’m sick of it. I also installed the Akismet anti-spam WordPress plug-in, which seems to be taking care of them for the most part. So far, only one piece of spammage has gone live on my blog, but that doesn’t seem to stop them.

I just wish they’d take a hike.

Meet Tessa!

July 1st, 2006

We have a new member of the family; Tessa!

Tessa

Tessa is a Springer Spaniel, and came to us yesterday, June 29th. She is about 4 years old, and is about as nice a dog as you could ask for. Her previous owner passed away in May, and Tessa had been staying with his daughter, Susan. She wasn’t able to keep Tessa, so posted an ad on Sioux Falls Freecycle. I read her post the morning it came out, and had a chance to mention it to Yvonne before I left for work. She thought it’d be worth a try, so I responded right away, giving my work number and our home phone number to call; Susan called Yvonne first, just to make sure getting a dog wasn’t all my idea. Smart move!

Tsakhiagiyn Elbegdorj

June 27th, 2006

Yvonne & I were invited to a dinner tonight, hosted by the AMONG Foundation. The guest speaker was Tsakhiagiyn Elbegdorj, who served two terms as prime minister in Mongolia, and was instrumental in bringing his country out of Communism and into a free democracy and market economy. He’s a very interesting man (known as the Thomas Jefferson of Mongolia) and told a lot of great stories about how democracy was brought about through a bloodless revolution.

He and Craig Lawrence told the story about how Elbegdorj was rescued from jail time, and perhaps death, by Senator Larry Pressler (R-SD) and an invitation to visit South Dakota. Following his first term as Prime Minister, he was charged with treason by the opposing party (the Communists) and was being interrogated by the Mongolian version of the CIA. People in South Dakota heard about the situation, contacted Pressler’s office and arranged to have an official invitation sent (hand delivered) to Elbegdorj’s office in Mongolia. His opponents were somewhat awestruck at the invitation and turned him loose on the condition that he return to Mongolia in a week. News of Elbegdorj’s visit here was printed in newspapers in Mongolia, with much embellishment — “All of America is praising Elbegdorj with standing ovations!” Of course there is a grain of truth to that, as he did receive a standing ovation from a meeting he visited in South Dakota, but all of America?

When he returned to Mongolia, his visit to the US gave him much credibility with the people, and silenced many of his critics. His trip here this week was in part to thank the people of South Dakota who played a part in arranging his earlier visit; he said that things would have been much different for him and for Mongolia if not for that invitation.

He mentioned that on his first visit, he spoke no English at all. But in the 15 years since then he has studied in Boulder, CO, and at Harvard University, and his command of the language is excellent. He still has a heavy accent, but speaks very well and has a good grasp of many of the twists and word plays that make for an interesting speaker.

One of the things Elbegdorj said tonight that I thought particularly interesting was a paraphrase of something Genghis Khan said:

Conquering the world on horseback is easy; it is dismounting and governing that is hard.

How true. Leading men in battle — where the enemy is clearly known and the objective is clear to all — while not necessarily easy, is much easier than managing the conquered lands and people afterward.

Just a small update: I stumbled across this post today and did a Google search on Elbegdorj’s name. Since I originally posted this (on June 27, 2006) he was elected as President of Mongolia. That’s pretty cool.

I am Superman!

June 20th, 2006

Or not. Maybe just a little like him I guess. At least according to this goofy test; go ahead, take the test (you know you want to) and report back what superhero you are.

My results:

I am Superman

According to the test, I am mild-mannered,
good, strong and love to help others. Wow.
I just wish I shared Clark’s physique too.

Because it’s my big brother Robbie’s birthday!

Happy Birthday, wherever you are!

Serious Wheels

April 6th, 2006

Serious Wheels is the place to go for high-resolution pics of most any car you can think of. Everything from this spiffy AC Cobra to this Aston Martin Zagato (not that I’m all enthralled with the Zagato, but how many other cars start with the letter Z?

The Apple Theme Song

March 29th, 2006

I had no idea that Apple had their own Theme Song. After watching the video of it, I kinda wish I didn’t know it.

It’s a bit like a train wreck; you can’t look away, but you want to scrub the images from your memory afterwards.

Wide Open Till You See God

Paul Dana crashed big time on Sunday. Not quite 31 years old.

From the video it looks like he lived his motto.

South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families

March 26th, 2006

How morally bankrupt can you get. This organization calls itself South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families, and their main goal is to keep abortion legal in South Dakota. Is it just me, or how can someone claim to have a healthy family when they are willing to kill their children?

Why is there such a distinction drawn between a child who is still in the womb and a child that has been born? The same people who insist that there must be abortion on demand seem to be the same ones who are the most disturbed when a news story about children being killed comes up.
I need to remember that those with whom I disagree on points like this are not my enemies, but people in need of God’s grace. And my prayers.

Empress of the Seas Cruise Ship Cutaway

March 22nd, 2006

Wow! I use Adobe Illustrator on a daily basis, and thought that there was some complexity to the files I work with, but this guy’s work leaves me speechless.

Like I said, wow!
