Where Politically Correct Indoctrination Goes Wrong

Tuesday, June 9th, 2015

This woman, whoever she is, needs to be heard, because what she has to say about the military’s sexual harassment training is spot on.

Kayce M. Hagen is a pen name assumed by an active duty enlisted airman. She wrote the following words to capture her thoughts after attending mandatory annual training given by her base’s Sexual Assault Response Coordination (SARC) office. I’m publishing her letter here not just because it captures in visceral form a sentiment I’ve heard repeatedly from airmen who are frustrated by increasingly tone-deaf and overwrought approaches to this issue, but also because I believe her input raises (or renews) two important questions. First, what is the current Sexual Assault Prevention program doing for the Air Force? Second, what is it doing to the Air Force? Kayce’s input explores these questions in a powerful way. Enjoy and respond. -Q.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Dear SARC,

I got up this morning as an Airman in the United States Air Force. I got up and I put on my uniform, I pulled back my hair, I looked in the mirror and an Airman looked back. A strong, confident military professional stared out of my bathroom mirror, and I met her eyes with pride. Then I came to your briefing. I came to your briefing and I listened to you talk to me, at times it seemed directly to me, about sexual assault. You talked about a lot of things, about rivers and bridges, you talked about saving people and victimization. In fact you talked for almost a full ninety minutes, and you disgusted me.

You made me a victim today, and I am nobody’s victim. I am an American Airman in the most powerful Air Force in the world, and you made me into a helpless whore. A sensitive, defenseless woman who has no power to protect herself, who has nothing in common with the men she works with. You made me untouchable, and by doing that you made me a target. You gave me a transparent parasol, called it an umbrella and told me to stand idly by while you placed everything from rape to inappropriate shoulder brushes in a crowded hallway underneath it. You put my face up on your slides; my face, my uniform, my honor, and you made me hold this ridiculous contraption of your own devising and called me empowered. You called me strong. You told me, and everyone else who was listening to you this morning that I had a right to dictate what they said. That I had a right to dictate what they looked at. That I had a right to dictate what they listened to. That somehow, in my shop, I was the only person who mattered. That they can’t listen to the radio because they might play the Beatles, or Sir Mix-A-Lot, and that I might be offended. That if someone plays a Katy Perry song, I might have flashbacks to a night where I made a bad decision. I might be hurt, and I’m fragile right? Of course I am, you made me that way.

You are the reason I room alone when I deploy. You are the reason that wives are terrified that their husbands are cheating on them when they leave, and I leave with them. When I walk into a room and people are laughing and having a good time, you are the reason they take one look at me and either stop talking or leave. They’re afraid. They’re afraid of me, and it’s because of you. They are afraid that with all of this “power” I have, I can destroy them. They will never respect me or the power and the authority I have as a person, or the power I have as an Airman, because I am nothing more than a victim. That I as a victim, somehow I control their fate. With one sentence, I can destroy the rest of their lives.

“He sexually assaulted me.”

I say enough. He didn’t assault me, you did; and I say enough is enough. If you want to help me, you need to stop calling me a victim. If you want to save me, you need to help me to be equal in the eyes of the people I work with. If you want to change a culture, you need to lessen the gap between men and women, not widen it. Women don’t need their own set of rules: physical training scores, buildings, rooms, raters, sponsors, deployment buddies. When I can only deploy with another woman ‘buddy’ you are telling me and the people around me that I can’t take care of myself. When you forbid me from going into my male friends room to play X-Box on a deployment with the other people on my shift, you isolate me. When you isolate me, you make me a target. When you make me a target, you make me a victim. You don’t make me equal, you make me hated. If I am going to be hated, it will be because of who I am, not because of who you have made me. I am not a victim. I am an American Airman, I am a Warrior, and I have answered my nation’s call.

Help me be what I am, or be quiet and get out of my way.

Climate Change Deniers Are Completely Insane

Wednesday, January 28th, 2015

I couldn’t agree more with this guy, Matt Walsh, in the article posted on theBlaze.com, Climate Change Deniers Are Completely Insane.

Here’s an excerpt:

If anyone is a climate change denier — that is, someone who denies that climates change — I’d agree that he is an imbecile and probably mentally unstable.

Yet that view doesn’t exist because we all know the climate changes. Of course the climate changes. It’s a climate. That’s what climates do. They change. It gets colder, it gets hotter, it rains, it snows, it does all kinds of things. I don’t deny that, and although I’m not a Republican and I take great exception to that accusation, I feel safe in speaking for them when I say that they neither deny the fact of the climate, nor the fact that the climate changes. Progressives use labels like “climate denier” or “climate skeptic” (for the people who are willing to believe that there might be a climate, but are still a little iffy on the whole thing) because they are not interested in an honest discussion. You either buy in to their environmental dogma one hundred percent, or you will be painted as an idiot, an infidel, and a maniac.

Now, why might a person be skeptical about the theory that humans are causing dramatic shifts to the climate, and that these shifts will eventually kill us all? Have you ever thought about why someone might have these reservations, JM? Have you really taken the time to consider the reasons for this skepticism? Yeah, they’re morons, right, I get it, but have you determined that they’re morons because the media and people on Twitter told you they’re morons, or because you gave their case a fair hearing and came away with the impression that they have absolutely nothing even slightly coherent to say? I’m guessing it’s more the former, which makes you not necessarily a moron yourself, but an intellectually lazy chump who can be easily herded and exploited.

There’s a lot more to his article; very well written, and very much in line with the way I see the issue. The climate change issue seems to have less to do with science than with politics, and the people making the most noise about it don’t do themselves any favors when they start demonizing anyone who doesn’t agree with them on the subject. Well done, Mr. Walsh; bookmarked.

Obama’s “Vote For Romney” Video

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

This video is all kinds of amazing. The best part is that President Obama has spent the last four years writing what is at its essence a Romney/Ryan campaign ad. How brilliant is that?

Actually, the content of that video is downright depressing. If it were a Republican President with glaring inconsistencies like that the media would be all over it. Good to see that tidbit from John Stewart in there; until that, everything I had heard from him had been pretty blatantly pro-Obama.

What Was He Thinking About?

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

I saw this photo on some website this morning…

… and thought it needed a caption, at minimum. But I think this is better…

I was thinking of Gazerbeam, but there weren’t many images of him dredged up by Google and I couldn’t tweak his helmet to fit the photo. I ended up using Frozone’s helmet for him, and what do you know; it fits!

I can almost hear him role playing with Michelle, “Honey? Where’s my super-suit?”

After listening to last night’s debate, if I couldn’t laugh at the candidates, I’d have to cry.

Incomplete? Really?

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

This is brilliant; the President gives himself an “incomplete” as a grade for his first term. Incomplete? Isn’t that the grade a kid gets when he slacks off and doesn’t turn in his assignments? Usually an “I” is given before the end of a term and is a warning for the kid to shape up and get his work turned in.

I don’t quite get how the President made that conclusion, nor what it means in his head, but following the conventional definition of an “incomplete”, I don’t hold out much hope for him to redeem himself before the end of this term. I think when he said that, shooting from the hip, he meant his job isn’t done and is hoping for another four years to complete what he’s started. Given the state of things today, he sure doesn’t deserve another four years to prove himself; I’m confident that in November he’ll get the grade he deserves from a large majority of voters; a resounding “F“.

And this just in; the DNC announced today that Barack’s convention speech will be held in a different venue tomorrow night. They are saying the move was prompted by the threat of thunderstorms predicted for Thursday night and concerns for safety in the 74,000 seat open-air Bank of America stadium. But given the slight chance of that (30%) it makes you wonder what the real motivation might be. Maybe the fear of a lightning strike is real, especially given the President’s tendency to stray from the truth, or maybe they’re more afraid of showing images of vast numbers of empty chairs. After all, like Mr. Eastwood showed us last week, there can be only one Empty Chair.

Madeline Albright & Gollum — Separated At Birth?

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

This video of comments from former Clinton Secretary of State Madeleine Albright at an Obama campaign rally in Colorado…

… reminds me of a scene from The Hobbit. (hint; zip forward to about 4:33, or click here to open the YouTube page.)

Yup; pretty sure they were separated at birth. 😉

Just Desserts

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

Earlier today I saw this video made by some self-righteous jerk as he harassed a poor Chick-fil-A drive-through girl… Tonight word is out that his actions cost him his job.

Vante regrets the unfortunate events that transpired yesterday in Tucson between our former CFO/Treasurer Adam Smith and an employee at Chick-fil-A. Effective immediately, Mr. Smith is no longer an employee of our company.
The actions of Mr. Smith do not reflect our corporate values in any manner. Vante is an equal opportunity company with a diverse workforce, which holds diverse opinions. We respect the right of our employees and all Americans to hold and express their personal opinions, however, we also expect our company officers to behave in a manner commensurate with their position and in a respectful fashion that conveys these values of civility with others.
We hope that the general population does not hold Mr. Smith’s actions against Vante and its employees.

I’m not one to express joy over another’s misfortunes, but I don’t think this counts as misfortune. I don’t care how much this guy disagreed with Dan Cathy’s stance on homosexuality, he had no business taking his misplaced frustrations out on poor Rachel, the woman in the drive-thru window. Rachel’s response to his tirade was perfect; the CEO’s views in no way affect how Chick-fil-A’s customers or employees are treated. She did just as she should have, politely told him it wasn’t proper for her to have a discussion like that on the job, and that it was making her uncomfortable; she put him in his place and sent him — politely — on his way. Good for her.

And good for Vante for putting this guy in his place.

The Most Arrogant Man In The World

Sad, but so very true.

“He picked Joe Biden to be his Vice President just to show he doesn’t need one.”

Because he is just that good.

I Am Now A Megadeth Fan

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

I can’t say that I could name a single Megadeth song, nor would I recognize one if I heard it played, but I am solidly a fan of the band’s frontman, Dave Mustaine

“I’m just hoping that whatever is in the White House next year is a Republican. I can’t bear to watch what’s happened to our great country. Everybody’s got their head in the sand. Everybody in the industry is like, ‘Oh, Obama’s doing such a great job…’ I don’t think so. Not from what I see.”

He goes on to say some right-on-the-money things about the other candidates in the Republican primary. I can’t tell you how good it is to hear some thoughtful commentary on politics from someone in the entertainment industry. Far, far better than the likes of Samuel L. Jackson who threw his support behind Barack Obama because he is black (cue rolling of eyeballs.)
