Chocolate Chip Cookies

Here’s the funniest joke I’ve heard all day. Enjoy!

An elderly man lay dying in his bed. In death’s agony, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies wafting up the stairs. He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed.

Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort forced himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands. With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death’s agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven. There, spread out upon newspapers on the kitchen table were literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies.

Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?

Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture. His parched lips parted; the wondrous taste of the cookie was already in his mouth; seemingly bringing him back to life. The aged and withered hand, shaking made its way to a cookie at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife.

“Stay out of those,” she said, “they’re for the funeral.”

“Phony Soldiers” Smear Letter on eBay

Friday, October 12th, 2007

Speaking of Rush Limbaugh, he announced on his show this afternoon that the letter sent to his syndication partner asking him to “publicly repudiate” the comments Rush made on the radio in regard to “phony soldiers”, is being auctioned on eBay.

Up for auction is the original letter signed by 41 Democrat senators. This historic document may well represent the first time in the history of America that this large a group of U.S. senators attempted to demonize a private citizen by lying about his views. As such, it is a priceless memento of the folly of Harry Reid and his 40 senatorial co-signers.

Mark Mays of Clear Channel Communications instead gave the letter to Rush, and now Rush is thumbing his nose at the Dems by auctioning it off, with the proceeds going to the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation. The letter would be a collector’s item if only for the signatures on it, but because the letter itself is such a low point for political discourse in this country… That makes this a huge, huge deal. Members of the US Senate, knowing full well what it is that was said, chose to distort the facts and attempt to smear the reputation of a private citizen. The call in question has been well publicized before and after Reid’s antics on the Senate floor, and can easily be found on YouTube, but that didn’t stop their attempt to smear Rush. McCarthyism is alive & well in the Democrat-led US Senate in 2007, except instead of dredging up charges of being a Commie, Reid & the Dems are smearing people trying to make them look like they are badmouthing the troops. That’s very ironic given the fact that so many Dems come out and bash the troops, the military leadership, and the entire Iraq war effort at every opportunity. If you support the troops, Mr. Reid, don’t give aid & comfort to the enemy by calling the war effort a failure.

I checked the auction right away when I heard about it, and there were no bids on it & it’s a restricted auction, and all bidders need to be preapproved before their bids can be accepted & but within a few hours the price was up to $5,600. With six days to go, it’ll be really interesting to see how high the bids go. I put a bid in on it ($200), knowing that I’d get outbid right away, and never did get a response; I’m guessing they had several bids way over that by the time they got to my request. The preauthorization business is to ensure that no Democrat staffer ends up as the winning bidder, which would possibly happen if Reid et al decide they’d like this little episode swept under the rug.

I grabbed the jpeg images of the original letter from the auction page; you can see them by clicking on the thumbnails below.

Update: I just checked the auction this morning, and the price is up to $45,000. And there’s still 4 days to go. Can you say “wow”? I did. Wow! Also, Rush has pledged to match the amount that the letter sells for to double the money going to the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation. He’s also challenged Sen. Reid and the other signatories to do the same; no response from them, surprise, surprise.

Holy Schnockers! Still 20 hours to go on the auction, and bidding has topped $500,000! scratch that; I hit refresh two minutes after checking the price, and there is now a $750,000 bid on it! There appear to be two bidders duking it out right now. y***t had the $500k bid; that was topped by d***r’s $511k bid, which was subsequently topped by y***t’s $750k bid. I won’t be surprised if the thing tops $1.5 million by the time it’s done!

Rush for President

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

rush_4_president.jpg

I heard Rush Limbaugh announce that he would run for President of the United States. If, that is, he’s wins the Nobel Peace Prize he’s been nominated for.

He’d probably fare better than the current crop of Republican candidates. And he’d do a better job than any of the Dems that are running. But can you imagine the howls from the left if he actually ran? And if he won? Oh, that would be fun!

Update: Rush won’t be running, because AlGore was picked to receive the Nobel. And the Nobel Committee lost any shred of credibility it ever had. And with Jimmy Carter and Yasar Arafat on the same list of Peace Prize recipients, those were some small shreds that were left over.

Waitless.org

Gadgetopia’s got some ad content going on right now that’s pretty entertaining; Sprint’s waitless.org. They’ve got a pile of Flash videos with helpful timesaving tips, along with how many days/weeks/years using that tip will save you throughout your life.

waitless.jpg

My favorite is the Turbo Parking. Best part is watching the guys at the food vendor cart run for cover when the car slides into the parking spot ahead of them! (I’d link to it, but that dratted Flash won’t do that; just go there, hover over the “See more Sprintcuts” button, and look for it.)

Definitely worth the wait. For the Flash to load, that is…

Happy Birthday To Me!

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

birthdayold.jpg

Today is my birthday! I don’t feel any older, but I guess I am; at least the calendar says so. How old? 29 (but don’t ask how many time’s I’ve celebrated that milestone!) Miss Cellania has the same birthday, and put up a big birthday post for the occasion, so I thought I would too.

Just out of curiosity, I poked around on the web to see how many notable figures we share the birthdate with; lots and lots. Some of the more notable names (at least the ones I recognize) include Google (9 years old today!), Samuel Adams, Gwyneth Paltrow, Shaun Cassidy, Meat Loaf (Marvin Lee Aday), Randy Bachman, and many others that I’ve never heard of.

Another amazing thing is how many lists of useless facts (aka: trivia) there are on the web. I found several that listed the notable events that happened on this date; the New York Times “On This Day”, Wikipedia’s Sept. 27 entry, BBC’s “On This Day”, Sympatico.ca, and others.

Somebody stop me before this gets too boring. Uh oh. Too late.

Chocolate Pudding

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Is there anything on this planet that tastes as good as chocolate pudding hot out of the pan? No, not the cheap crap that comes pre-made in little plastic cups. And not the instant crud that you mix with cold milk. Rather, I speak of the Real Chocolate Pudding that you have to cook on the stove, stirred into milk, and bring to a boil.

I’ve made it from scratch, and that can be good too. But for a quick chocolatey fix, there is nothing like cheap store-brand cooked chocolate pudding. Mmmmmm. Goodness!

The VogaBike

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

A couple of weekends ago I bumped into something online that made me dig up some sketches I’d made years ago (1985 or ’86 I think). Back then I was wanting to build a record-breaking human-powered speed machine. I reasoned that the pedaling action on standard bikes was less than efficient, but the rowing action would allow the power of the legs, back and arms to work in unison to generate the horsepower to scoot along at much higher speeds. Of course, in rowing there is a return stroke that nullifies some of the efficiency gains, but I think that putting the back and arms into the mix more than compensates for the momentum loss in the return stroke.

Back then, the incentive for the project was a contest promoted by a magazine (can’t remember which) that offered a $10,000 award to the first person who could hit and sustain 60mph in a human powered vehicle. Being newly married (or about to marry… Can’t remember exactly), and about to quit my job to start college, that cash would’ve been great seed money. Unfortunately, life got in the way, and the prize money was claimed long before my ideas even got off my sketchbook.

I still think the rowing motion has a lot more potential for speed than pedaling, and I’d still like to revive the idea and build a row-powered bike, just for fun. Digging around a bit online led to the realization that my idea is not original, and others have actually built such creatures, some being mass manufactured & marketed. Of course, some embodiments of that idea are better than others, and some are just downright screwy. One of the better ones that Google brought to light for me is the VogaBike. This machine is truly brilliant. The Italian geniuses at VogaBike seemed to have come up with dead-simple solutions to a lot of the problems that I had encountered in trying to design a row-powered bike.

So slick I just might have to borrow a few of their ideas. 😉

“Strange Things Done In The Midnight Sun…”

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

Last Sunday morning we had a guest speaker at Central; Bob Thune, senior pastor of Southwest Community Church. Pastor James is out of town, and Bob happens to be the brother of Senator John Thune, who happens to attend Central.

Bob’s sermon was very good and all (listen here), but the thing that got me rolling this morning was a poem he shot from the hip while doing a sound check.

There are strange things done ‘neath the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold.
The arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold.
The northern lights have seen queer sights
But the queerest they ever did see,
Was that night on the marge of Lake LeBarge
When I cremated Sam McGee.

Of course I didn’t remember all of that, only the last line. But I had never heard the poem before, and I wanted to find out more about it; being the geek that I am, to Google I went. Holy cow; how have I not heard that poem before! The poem “The Cremation of Sam McGee” was written by Robert Service and published in 1907. And the story surrounding the writing of the poem is at least as interesting as the poem itself.

While the character and the events in the poem are purely fictional, it was based in part on some factual events. According to the Wikipedia article about the poem, while visiting the Yukon Territory, Service heard a story from a doctor there about how the doctor had once cremated the remains of an unnamed prospector after finding him dead & frozen while making a house call. Later, Service happened across the name of Sam McGee while working at a bank in Whitehorse, Alberta. Service contacted McGee to ask permission to use his name in the poem, which resulted in making “Service famous and McGee the subject of ridicule.” The Wikipedia information is backed up in part by an article on UpHere.ca

One of the first links Google returned was an NPR page about the poem; they even had the audio of Johnny Cash reciting it. Give that a listen here or click through to read the poem in its entirety.

Oh; it’s also interesting to read some of Bob Thune’s writings. Found some of them on Musings Link

The Burma-Shave Booklet

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

burmashave_fc_lr.jpg

A while back whilst browsing through a neighbor’s garage sale, I picked up a really spiffy copy of a Haynes Guide for Yellowstone National Park, printed in 1959. Aside from some dented corners and some kids’ scribbles on the cover, it’s in beautiful shape. Flipping through the pages when I got home, I discovered a bonus hidden inside; a Burma-Shave booklet. Volume X to be exact, printed in 1942. It’s a tiny little thing, about 2″ x 2″, printed on cheap paper that had yellowed badly over the years, but it’s still very much readable. The booklets were likely included in a package with a can or jar of Burma-Shave, as they had product use instructions printed inside, and as a bonus, 44 of the Burma-Shave roadside jingles.

Clever little idea, those Burma Shave jingles. The company leased space from farmers all over the country & placed signs along the highways and byways everywhere. It was always one verse per sign, with a number of signs spaced out in a row so passersby would read them in sequence as they drove by, with the Burma-Shave logo ending the series. I can imagine that most travelers would take notice of these signs, especially back in the days before radio signals covered the country and before every car was decked out with multimedia entertainment.

Click through to see the entire booklet, and a transcription of the jingles.
