The Harrington Junior

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Here’s something pretty cool: The Harrington Junior.

harrington_bugatti_sm.jpg

The Junior series includes the Bugatti (pictured above), plus a Porsche Speedster, a Jaguar E-Type, a Mercedes 300SL and a Willys Jeep. All are about half-scale replicas of the originals and look pretty realistic. If it weren’t for the steering wheel being in the middle and a little larger than scale, it’d be pretty hard to tell they’re scale replicas.

Of course, put real people next to it and it’s pretty obvious.

Not sure who the manufacturer is; sounds like they are built in Vietnam, but the company is managed from Great Britain. Also no indication of what the selling price is; no doubt they’re pretty spendy.

They also build & sell replacement parts for Isettas, and Isetta replicas. The thing that drew me here was an electric-powered Isetta replica… Would that be cool or what?! I get the feeling that it’s probably little more than vaporware, but it’s a great thought.

Hemmings Auto Blog

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Another site I visit regularly is Hemmings Auto Blog. Always some photos of some great looking cars and interesting stories about them. It’s an offshoot of the ever excellent Hemmings Motor News; the place for buying or selling classic automobiles.

Well worth a visit.

The Cheetah

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Here’s another machine that we saw at Automania 2008. What a jaw-dropper!

284.jpg 283.jpg

When I saw the car at the show, I had no idea what it was. No sign on it, and the owner was talking with some other folks when I was there. I only overheard parts of what he was saying about the car — something about 500-plus horsepower in a 1,500 pound car…

Then earlier this week I was poking around online and at random clicked on an ad in the project cars section at carsonline.com, and ended up at Nickey (with a backwards K), and found this listing for a 1965 Cheetah for sale — same car! And only $99,500.

The Cheetah was commissioned by Chevrolet as a competitor to Carroll Shelby’s Cobra, and was built in limited numbers by Bill Thomas. I won’t attempt to explain the history of the car; others have done that already, and all you ever wanted to know can be found on the Cheetah Wikipedia page and Official Bill Thomas Cheetah Website. Production on the car was pretty limited back in the early sixties, but a kit car version of it has been available for some time, and is still being sold. Not sure, but I think the one at the show was an original fiberglass-bodied version.

It’s a mean looking car in pictures, but the photos really don’t do this beast justice. In person though… Wow.

South Side Performance At Automania

Friday, June 27th, 2008

It’s been a busy week for me since the Automania show last Wednesday, but there were a few things of interest there that I wanted to share (Ian & I went to the show, and between the two of us, snapped over 300 photos; some are worth seeing, some not so much, but if you’re interested in the whole schmere, you can have a peek here.)

There’s always stuff being shown by different retailers and garages and whatnot, but the display put on by South Side Performance was pretty incredible; I was a bit flabbergasted by what these guys pulled off. Not only did they have a bevy of hot cars to show off, but they also brought out their CNC Water Jet, set it up on the street, and set about cutting aluminum key fobs to give away.

The fact that this machine is able to cut metal (up to 8 inches thick) with water and agate is amazing enough, but for these guys to tear the machine down, pull it out of the shop, haul it — and a rented compressor & generator — downtown, set it up on the street (with a chance of rain in the forecast) and hook it all up is over the top.

As far as I can tell, South Side Performance has no web presence (yet) but there are a number of YouTube videos of various cars on their AWD dyno. Here is a little video tour of the shop, which is nice as I’ve driven by the place dozens of times but have never been inside:

I might have to get to know these guys a little better.

Automania 2008 Is On For Tonight!

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Yes! The Night of the Hot Rods has finally arrived!

Automania is tonight, June 18, 2008. The weather forecast looks excellent, so you can bet that I’ll be there, dragging the boys around (or maybe the other way round) snapping pictures of everything they’re not interested in. They’ll likely be gawking at the shiny Ferraris, Lamborginis and Mustangs while I’m looking at the rat rods and classics. No matter; it’ll be fun.

Last year I snapped a few photos of the marvelous rig, It’s Five-O’Clock Somewhere, and posted them on this site. Neatorama picked it up and posted on it; from there it got linked all over the place. Not sure if the Bortschellers will be back this year or not, but I’ll be sure to shake his hand if he is.

This year Tommy James and The Shondells will be playing… I’ve already got Crimson & Clover running through my head!

2009 Dodge Purple People Eater

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Dodge has officially revealed the 2009 Challenger, and dang is it hot. The only thing it’s missing is that lovely Mopar purple paint job that reminds me so much of the Mopar musclecars from the ’60’s.

To remedy that, we now have Photoshop and the Replace Color… function.

Now idn’t dat purty? I likes it.

Wilcraft Ice Fishing Machine

Monday, February 18th, 2008

I saw an ad for this thing on tv tonight; the Wilcraft ice fishing rig. “Because trucks don’t float.”

wilcraft.jpg

The ad aired during the Kent Hrbek Outdoors Show, and made me laugh out loud. I mean, a purpose-built $10,000 buggy made for rapid deployment for… ice fishermen?

Roll this bad boy off your trailer, drive out to your favorite spot (using your GPS, of course), drop the bottom down on the ice, pop up the tent top, drill a couple of holes and you’re in. Hear about a hot spot somewhere else on the lake? Pull in the lines, drop the tent top, lift the bottom, start the engine, and you’re off in seconds flat. Thin ice in between the spots? No problem. This baby floats. If the snow is deep, all you need is the optional Track System; next best thing to a snow cat.

I think some people have just too much time & money on their hands. How long until we get photos of a redneck-built version, made from a jonboat and an old 4-wheeler?

Citroen 2CV Rat Rod

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

Now this. Is. Cool.

c2cv_2_s.jpg

Not what you’d expect in a rat rod at all, but what would kinda naturally flow from what began as a front-drive rattletrap of a car. The Citroen 2CV is pretty rare here in the US, but they’re common as houseflies in Europe, so it makes sense that people mod them into every conceivable form, as evidenced by this video. There are some who go so far as to convert them to four-wheel-drive.

c2cv_3_s.jpg

Since the car is front drive, there is no need to do much of anything with the rear wheels, so the builder took the opportunity to emphasize the rear swingarm. While I’ve never seen a 2CV’s rear swingarm, I can only guess that this is an exaggeration of the original; or maybe that’s just its normal size. From what I’ve seen in photos on the net, both the front & rear suspension consists of swingarms attached to torque tubes, utilizing a funky horizontal spring and shock absorber setup for each corner, similar to a VW’s rear end.

c2cv_4_s.jpg

I just love how the rear wheels look like self-contained pods that trail along behind the car. The way they’re built, you’d better hope you never get a flat tire on the road; I sure don’t see any way to get them off.

c2cv_6_s.jpg

The interior is pretty bare. The Carscoop article I got the photos from mentioned that it’s a work in progress. They didn’t have much info on it, and I’ve been able to find nothing more on it through Google.

c2cv_5_s.jpg

With some of the other cars that have been built from 2CV’s, I’ve been somewhat inspired to take one on as a project to see what I could come up with. There’s even one in a junkyard near here, listed as a “project car”. Looks like something for Jalopnik’s Project Car Hell; I’m sure it would be just that.

Makela Auto Tuning

Monday, January 28th, 2008

When I grow up, I want to work at MAT (Makela Auto Tuning). Yes, I’ll move to Finland. Yes, I’ll learn the language. Yes, I’ll put up with the long winter nights. Just for the chance to work on some of the great projects they showcase on their site.

model_a_side_lr.jpg

Take for instance the 1929 Model A Ford (featured yesterday on Jalopnik). They took a beat up old Model A, tore it down to bare components and rebuilt it using a Cosworth racing engine and lots of other updated parts. The suspension retains the look and a lot of the parts from the original solid-axle design, but has been stiffened and tuned to make it handle like something a little more modern. The level of craftsmanship exemplified in cars like this Model A is just… breathtakingly beautiful.

model_a_wheel.jpg

Take for instance the wheels; while they look like the original wood-spoke wheels, they are actually milled from billet aluminum.

model_a_engine1.jpg

And the engine… I haven’t seen a lot of Model A engines, but at first glance this thing looks as vintage as the rest of the car. But when this thing is wound up, the thing screams like the banshee that is the Cosworth; load the video on YouTube and make sure the sound is turned up! Then they added one last trick for realism; a “secret misfire switch” on the shifter that makes it sound like the old pop-and-miss Model A engine.

Some of the other cars they’ve got showcased on the site are even more spectacular than the Model A; Ferrari’s, Maserati’s and others that they have rebuilt to better-than-new condition. These guys are better than good.

Ok, so moving to Finland isn’t really an option I’m considering — not that it’s likely they’d hire me anyway. But a guy can dream anyway!

Metropolitan Minnesota

metropolitan_minnesota_sm.jpg

Here’s a funny photo I found on eBay… It was on an auction for a 1959 Nash Metropolitan, in Minnesota. Dairy country, no doubt!

I’ve been looking half-heartedly for a project car; kinda thinking ahead to Ian getting his license in a year or so. It’d be fun to pick up something that needs a little work, spiff it up during the summer before his 16th birthday to help him gain a greater appreciation for whatever he’s driving. I doubt I’m up to a project like this little Nash, and I also doubt he’d be up to driving something like that in any condition, but it’s fun to look!. (here’s the eBay link, as long as it lasts.)
